Captain Cook got it from the Endeavor River blacks,who pronounce it to-day exactly as it is spelled in the greatnavigator's journal, but they use it now only for the big toe. These roots areroasted and eaten by the aborigines; in taste they resemblebeet-root, and are sometimes called in the colony nativepotatoes. In Melbourne it goes bythe name of the Yarra herring.
